Senior students John Lynch and Don Coakley paint the entire figure in oil in this interior studio, where the lighting on the model (on the stand behind the easels) can be kept consistent. Painting the full figure in full colour is the most difficult task an artist faces, and these painters are ready for the challenge after working through the step-by-step systematic curriculum at ARA. Our instruction is designed to keep you interested and challenged, but there is always support and help so you don't get lost or overwhelmed.

Description:

A close-up study of two types of blossom. Artists often "study" parts of larger compositions in order to decide on the treatment of challenging subjects, such as live flowers. This study can stand alone as a painting, because the work has been taken to a beautiful, realistic finish.

In the Bargue room, full of natural light, senior instructor Fernando Freitas (middle) takes over at a drawing board to demonstrate. Student artists will return to their own "horse" seats afterward. Curriculum work done in this studio includes the famous Bargue-Gerome design course from the 19th century academies -- a course of copying master drawings that teaches many drawing fundamentals.

Painting instructor Juan Martinez, an established realist artist and portraitist, demonstrates a head study from the live model in this portrait intensive. Juan's teaching often includes a teacher's demo that students enjoy and benefit from. ARA students begin painting at the third level. This is an inside studio, where the light can be controlled very exactly.
